iView MediaPro 3

A flexible, professional  Digital Asset Manager

by Bob Singer

iView’s MediaPro 3 is an excellent digital asset management (DAM) program. MediaPro 3 enables you to create customized catalog volumes that support more than 100 different file formats including images, audio, video, fonts and more.

The MediaPro 3 Catalog Finder quickly scans your drives and enters your created catalogs.  And for security, each of your individual catalogs can be password protected. By the way, catalogs can be browsed even when your original files are offline and can be kept up-to-date with MediaPro’s “folder watching” option.  “Folder Watching” is the term for monitoring selected hard drive or network locations for the addition of new assets. If new assets are detected in a designated location and Folder Watching is turned on, the new assets can be automatically added to your catalog.

The next step can be bypassed, but is important if you want to take advantage of MediaPro’s highest speed capabilities. In MediaPro’s EDIT pull-down menu, click on PREFERENCES,  select MEDIA RENDERING, and the MEDIA pop-up window appears. You’ll find a checkbox on the second line following the word “Thumbnails.” When this box is NOT checked, iView MediaPro will build its own thumbnails, usually of higher quality than the ones created in your camera or by your editing application which typically create very low resolution image thumbnails. However, having MediaPro build its own thumbnails will also noticeably slow down importing images.  In contrast, when you check the “Thumbnails” box, MediaPro will NOT create its own thumbnails, but will instead import and use the lower quality thumbnails that were created by your camera or image editing program. You can change this later by going to the ACTION pull-down menu and selecting “Rebuild Item.”

MediaPro is so quick that it can save you large blocks of time, especially if your asset library is a large one. MediaPro 3 will easily and rapidly import, organize, search, annotate, repurpose and archive catalogs that each can contain up to 128,000 digital files. You can use intelligent drag-and-drop import to speed the work and, when you’re done, you can view your selections as a slide show with variables like viewing time that you can set. You can add transitions, too, a nice touch when your clients and friends are looking at your catalog’s content.

The slide show panel gives you access to timing, volume adjustment, play-pause-forward-back buttons, transitions, scale and grid settings.

Batch processing makes renaming and converting large numbers of files very quick. You can edit images in single or batch mode with “version control,” publish and distribute media with cross-platform slide shows, movies or Web galleries, and create high quality PDF composites, contact sheets and printouts in any size and layout.

iView has incorporated a number of new features into MediaPro 3 that enhance its usefulness. Some of these features are outstanding like the ProLightbox that lets you view up to four images side-by-side in full screen mode, compare, zoom and scroll to the same point on multiple images simultaneously, mark favorite selections, and display a histogram for every image.

Other features include streamlined annotation with a user-defined vocabulary permits more consistent annotation from the time you import right through export. A Dynamic file import control lets you create catalogs faster by batch-renaming files, applying multiple annotations and copying media files to folders automatically on import.  MediaPro 3 supported files types now include WMV, WMA, Microsoft Word and more.   Advanced Web gallery catalog publishing options have been expanded.  Media Pro 3 gives you total control over your asset library including e-mailing files directly from a catalog, watermarking and embedding metadata, batch renaming, a histogram and pixel magnifier and a lot more.
